Joan-Dianne Smith

MSW, RSW, FCGPA

I’m a Past-President of the Canadian Group Psychotherapy Association. I have a background in clinical work, education, training, supervision, consultation and in designing and implementing specific therapeutic groups in mental health and community settings. My MSW from Wilfrid Laurier University (1975) focused on clinical counselling, and my group psychotherapy training at Smith College, MA, (1980) involved theoretical, technical, and experiential components in groups. This laid the foundation for my understanding of psychodynamics and unconscious group processes.

I have been a frequent presenter and faculty member at both the American and Canadian Group Psychotherapy Association conferences. A topic that has been well received for the past few years is entitled, “Longing to Belong: Exploring Barriers to Connection and Closeness,” a full day experiential workshop led by myself and Allan Sheps of Toronto.

Most importantly, as I believe in lifelong personal growth, learning, and integration, I continue to work regularly with my own consultants.
